Method

What is slipform construction?

Slipform construction uses moving formwork that is progressively raised while concrete is placed and gains enough early strength to retain the formed shape. The formwork, working platforms, lifting system, reinforcement activity and concrete supply operate as one coordinated construction system.

The method is considered for reinforced-concrete structures with substantial vertical repetition or continuity. The form geometry and operating sequence are engineered for the particular structure rather than treated as a universal mould.

Planning

What must be coordinated before a slip.

  • Structure geometry, wall thickness and height
  • Concrete supply, workability and early-age behaviour
  • Reinforcement density, openings and embedded items
  • Jack, yoke, platform and equipment arrangement
  • Material handling, access and shift continuity
  • Survey, alignment, quality and safety controls

These inputs interact. A workable slipform plan therefore depends on project drawings, site constraints, concrete assumptions, interfaces and programme rather than structure type alone.

Suitability

When slipform may not be the right method.

Slipform is not automatically preferable for every concrete structure. Complex geometry changes, interruptions that cannot be coordinated, limited concrete continuity, difficult reinforcement or embed sequences, restricted access, or a scope too small to justify the operating system can favour another formwork approach.

Method selection should be made against the actual drawings, construction programme, site logistics, quality requirements and commercial scope.
